The “Thrills” of the Challenge

Since last November I have had one particular arena in Florida on my radar because I had heard rumblings about how they were revamping their space and really stepping things up in some interesting ways. That’s why my first stop upon arriving in Florida was to Thrills Laser Tag and Arcade in Miramar Beach.

I was intrigued to see how they had designed this arena, now using Laserforce Gen 8 gear, and what was inside that would make it so much different from the other places I had visited.

I joined a group and we entered the briefing area where a drum beat set the stage, creating an atmosphere before anything else happened. You know how I love an immersive experience, and the sounds in that first room were already cultivating a mood. This is where we watched the first of two briefing videos that established a storyline for the game to follow.

A wizard-like image filled the screen and told a story about two rival tribes fighting over an ancient artifact, the golden monkey.

This video explained the storyline, then we proceeded to the briefing room where a second video detailed the elements of the game in a clever way, using “hieroglyphic” imagery.

I thought these videos were creative and original, although perhaps a bit lengthy to go through both every time. There was some humor as well… “No foul language…I heard that!” However, they set up the experience well for an introduction to what comes next upon entering the arena.

This two-story arena looks sharp and has a LOT going on! My first impression was that the statement structure in the center is enhanced tremendously by the stunning realistic artwork decorating the walls.

As I maneuvered through the lower level I found beacons acting as base targets, then of course I had to protect the gates with my team.

I proceeded up the ramps to the second level, where there were some interesting things to be found.

The structures on top featuring serpents heads were unusual. At first they just look like towering locations to find the generator targets (which, if you look closely, you can see they are). However, I am quite certain I actually awakened their “warbot” fury because what I observed is that there were multiple layers to this game with multiple objectives that I first experienced on this upper level. You didn’t just have to avoid being tagged by other players, but also by elements of the arena itself.

The layers of the game experience include of course the basic game (tag players and bases and hit some sporadic bonus targets along the way), and then layer on top of that avoiding the warbot who can target you if you get in it’s way, but then there was the added challenge of finding, opening and battling the “artifacts” appearing in the form of animatronic guardians, which would also fire back at you. To make these artifacts appear, players should ideally work together to tag the sub-targets positioned around it multiple times and “awaken” the arena guardian…who of course wakes up cranky and continually tries to tag you back as punishment for interrupting its beauty sleep! See how this played out for me at Thrills as I set off in search of the golden monkey inside the Temple of Doom!

So there are the players, the warbot, the guardians and in my case one more level of challenge. As a level nine player I have to land five tags on an opponent in order to deactivate them. Try doing that with thirty players and all these additional elements firing back at you in the living arena…whew!

It really was quite a challenge because of all these different facets. This strikes me as the kind of arena where a player could enter by themselves and still face enough challenges to have a decent experience. However, there were plenty of players in the games I played at Thrills, so I got the full challenge and it was awesome!

And in case you are wondering, I did in fact find and conquer the golden monkey!

Actually, the serpent was the final artifact I tagged in my last game inside this arena. I had unlocked the sub-targets by myself and then I was tagging and dodging to complete the sequence. I gave a fist-pump to the air as I captured that guardian and deactivated it in the literal last second of the game! Those are the experiences that get the adrenaline pumping and make you say “let’s do that again!” :)

So, my time at Thrills Laser Tag and Arcade was well worth the travel. Plus my unexpected detour to Florida now allows me to say I played laser tag in both Alaska and Florida within roughly 24 hours! It was an awesome experience and I look forward to my next opportunity to challenge the Thrills Temple of Doom. :)

A Surge of Fun

As my tag travels through the south continued I found myself in Mobile, AL paying a visit to Surge Entertainment located in the Shoppes at Bel Air. I had been given heads up that this was one to watch and that they had a new theme going into effect, so I was keeping my eyes open, watching for something different…I needed to look up!

I want to shout out Roberta, an excellent staff member who impressed me a lot. When I arrived, the kid at the bowling counter pointed me in the direction of laser tag and when I got there I looked around for someone to help me. Roberta was right on top of things and told me their procedure is for me to buy a game card from a kiosk. When I asked “where and how” she personally walked me over to the kiosk and took me through the process step by step. THAT is an impressive extra gesture that I don’t see in too many places. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve been in this same scenario where the staff member just pointed in a vague direction disinterestedly. Too many of those experiences make a good, attentive employee stand out all the more.

She then walked me over to the vesting room and gave a thorough, informative briefing. Plus, I was the only one there so she was also ready and willing to do a 1v1 so I could experience the arena. I appreciate people like Roberta who provide a great customer experience. She is an asset to this business.

We entered the Serpent’s Curse laser tag arena with our Delta Strike Genesis gear. Ok, I’m a reptile mama, so as you can guess I was loving this theme, which I understand is different from some of the other Surge locations with laser tag. There were plenty of cool snakes all throughout the space.

I loved the way these props formed cool archways. If you are looking for it, there are also color distinctions in the snakes, which helps identify different parts of this single-level arena.

And some of the serpents serve a functional purpose, such as being a target housing. You have to look up to see the bonus target positioned under this serpent’s head.

The atmosphere had a lot of cool accents to enhance the space.

I always enjoy seeing unique theming in an arena and I felt like this one did a good job freshening some classic theming with some pieces I was seeing for the first time.

I enjoyed my game experience at Surge Entertainment in Mobile, AL and hope to visit some others. The was intrigued to learn that these facilities are co-owned by Drew Brees, known for being a star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.

Perhaps next time I’ll get to play one of their locations in Louisiana, but for now I was delighted to enjoy a game in Mobile because this was a great way to check off Alabama as I continue to laser tag my way through all 50 states.

A Mississippi “Big Play” Day

When I left Alaska, I knew my original plan to continue in to Hawaii would have to be revised. Even though the laser tag arena in Hawaii is not on Maui, I assumed that the people impacted would be transported to the other islands and the timing for leisure travel did not seem right, so I re-routed my trip. At first I thought I’d end up tagging in the northwestern part of the country, but when you go with the flow and stay flexible the adventures just find you! An unexpected opportunity led me to run twenty gates to catch a flight to New Orleans by the skin of my teeth!

Once in New Orleans I rented a car and headed east, first towards Mississippi where I found myself driving along Biloxi Beach, headed for big fun and Big Play Entertainment Center in Biloxi, MS.

Jordan and Hailey and I put on Delta Strike Genesis packs while gamemaster Stephanie (who I called Jem because I love her pink hair!) explained the game.

Then we entered an impressively decked out, double level Star Wars-inspired arena.

There were plenty of game targets scattered throughout.

The walls were a typical CW design, but the most notable and unique elements enhanced the space-themed atmosphere.

And I particularly liked one real showpiece prop suspended from above.

While I didn’t expect to pass through Mississippi when my day began, I am so glad I had a chance to experience some laser tag here at Big Play Entertainment.

I also enjoyed having a chance to enjoy a gorgeous day along Biloxi Beach!

I stopped at a cute little souvenir stand and soaked up a bit of sunshine before continuing on to see what surprises would be next in this unexpected leg of my trip. Go with the flow and you never know what you will encounter!

What I Came Here To Do

When I committed to tagging my way through all 50 states a second time, my goal was to play at different arenas than I had the first time around, specifically to show support for the laser tag arenas that had either survived through or opened for business after the pandemic. It’s a different laser tag landscape now than it was a few years ago. So, the time frame of this latest goal began when travel started to bounce back. I was happy that, since my last time in Anchorage, Shockwave Trampoline Park was now offering laser tag and they were my primary destination when I planned my trip to Alaska.

I had spoken to manager Lexi ahead of my visit and she let Edna know to expect me. She set me up to play a game of Zone Helios CE against Joyce and Donovan, a game experience that made me incredibly happy!

We circled around the single-level CW arena. I love this game…and THIS is what I came here to do.

Anytime I am able to play with this style phaser it feels like coming home…

…even when I find myself in very different environments.

Then again, when I’m in the “Zone” and tagging a base it all seems right and familiar. :)

Now here’s the most notable things about the arena.

There’s an enormous painting of a volcano against one side wall. This really resonated with me because (as you may recall from a previous post) if all had gone according to plan I would have been heading for Hawaii after Alaska. However, the terrible, destructive wildfires on Maui prevented that from being possible. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Hawaii. However, the irony was not lost on me that here I was in Alaska, laser tagging next to a volcano.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time tagging at Shockwave!

And I am delighted to know there is one more great place to play laser tag…in case I ever make a third journey to tag in Alaska! :)
