I Played the World’s Largest Laser Tag Arena on Laser Tag Day!

I played the world’s largest laser tag arena on Laser Tag Day! Being able to have this experience was the main reason I anchored my trip in the Midwest. I have been to the EDGE 618 on Belleville, IL a couple of times before, but playing a unique arena like this, which is completely unlike any other, was well worth making a visit on this day meant to celebrate the industry.

It was a delight to visit with owners Keith and Mary Schell who have been so hospitable to me whenever I visit this site. My last occasion to be here was when they hosted me for a Tag 4 A Cause event. Keith and I enjoyed some time to catch up over fried cheese curds (a specialty in their restaurant served with a raspberry sauce) while discussing laser tag and life. Then we made the visit official as I joined the first game of the night headed into the over 14,000 square foot arena that Keith designed himself. It is pretty amazing to play here knowing it has this special distinction.

Since my last visit, they have implemented a video briefing appearing on multiple monitors with a storyline theme to set the stage as you leave planet earth and are made to feel like you are on a spaceship bound for the Pandora Forest. They produced it with their own staff demonstrating the gear inside their own arena, so it was more interesting to watch than just the standard LF briefing video.

The first game of the night was a game of Masters with a group of players who had clearly been here before and had some experience, which was a great way to start.

This arena is massive in a way that you really have to experience firsthand! Its size makes it not only a particularly cool space to explore, but it also challenges me every time to find the various elements. Case in point…my pack reminded me “don’t forget the crystal target” and I commented to a fellow player that “don’t forget” is not the same as “I can’t remember where it is, lol!

Upon entering there is an area with towers and ramps and a painted design that helps you navigate as you are looking for the bases and traversing the space.

However, there is a bridge you cross to enter the other half of the arena, which is where I feel the magic really happens. The Pandora Forest evokes an otherworldly feeling that is so different from any other arena I have played anywhere else.

The neon mushroom trees tower high above you if you are on the lower level and you will want to look for targets in the trees for sure!

And speaking of trees, the most distinctive structure in the entire arena has got to be this gigantic tree with a trunk that is large enough to enter, tag around and through and even peek out the windows as you get to the top!

Together we waved the Laser Tag Day banner from the treetop as players were engaged in the game going on all around us. Mary and I smiled for the pics while Keith was picking off players from this vantage point of height…love it!

We swapped a few tags from the bridge as well.

And if you were looking closely during that game you would have found us heralding Laser Tag Day from atop the catwalk.

I love that Keith and Mary got into the fun on this day! And so did everyone else. We created a little spectacle by taking our commemorative photos during the game, but anyone who was playing during that session was certainly now aware that they too were playing laser tag on International Laser Tag Day and that is a pretty cool way to mark the occasion!

My thanks for the invitation to play here on Laser Tag Day. I always thoroughly enjoy getting to tag in the world’s largest laser tag arena at The EDGE!

A Historic First Stop

My first stop on Laser Tag Day was to pay a visit to Scottie’s Fun Spot in Quincy, IL. This is a third-generation legacy family entertainment center in their 89th year of operation, which made it a particularly cool place to start the day!

I met owner Jeff Scott who grew up in this family business following a virtual introduction by Clint Novak the night before. Jeff gave me a tour of the facility, which includes a 2400 square foot laser tag arena where they are running Helios 2. He walked me over to the arena entrance, which is decked out with this cool spaceship that really grabs attention. Beam me up, Scottie’s! :)

The vesting room had about 20 H2 packs ready to go.

And the CW designed arena is bright and vibrant.

When the game began I discovered they had all the bells and whistles installed including video bases, game station and targets all over the arena. I headed first to the blue base station and discovered I could deactivate it up to three times…so I did.

As I played against the three young players who joined me for this game I taught them how to tag the base with three shots, but I didn’t miss an opportunity to tag the targets as well. I love the thundering boom sound effect (that in my head I call the “mic drop”).

I enjoyed seeing some of the unique arena elements, like this interesting creature guarding from above.

And speaking of what’s above, Scottie’s has an upstairs observation deck that is perfect for getting a bird’s eye view of the game.

Two windows look out over both the arena and the glow golf attractions. Jeff told me they reworked the previously larger arena to accommodate having space for two attractions instead. I must admit, it’s an attractive pirate’s theme glow golf.

They also have outdoor mini golf and karting attractions to offer as well.

But what has been the mainstay attraction since the facility opened in 1936 is the roller skating rink.

Jeff told me they are the longest running skating rink in the country, which makes this quite a historic FEC! The laser tag was added about 15 years ago in 2010. The party rooms pay homage to the various attractions, including this awesome laser tag wall.

However, what is most eye catching about the party area is something I really think is brilliant…the wall of handprints dated for the birthdays of all the kids who have had their birthday celebrations at Scottie’s Fun Spot. Amazing!

This idea is absolutely GENIUS and I’m sure it makes the birthday kid feel special both on their party day and when they come back and find their handprint on the wall…

…or the ceiling!

This is quite a remarkable visual to take in and in my opinion is a really great idea that impressed me to see.

As I left I paused by the billboard out front that promotes the longevity of this site. I am so glad I got to experience this FEC and learn about their decades-long history of success in western Illinois as my first arena visit of International Laser Tag Day!

International Laser Tag Day: Overview of an Adventure

March 28th is celebrated annually as International Laser Tag Day in honor of the anniversary of the grand opening of the first commercial laser tag attraction, Photon in Dallas, TX on that date in 1984. Over the last 41 years the laser tag industry has grown exponentially and continues to thrive more than four decades later as a significant part of the amusement sector worldwide. Laser Tag Day is a reminder of where it all began and what we have to enjoy now.

I selected four arenas in the midwest to be part of my Laser Tag Day adventure and will be spotlighting my visits to each one individually in the next few days. However, the general overview of my Laser Tag Celebration begin with flying into St. Louis the night before and driving about two hours north to be in position to start Laser Tag Day bright and early in northwestern Illinois and work my way south all the way to western Tennessee.

The arenas I planned to visit included Scottie’s Fun Spot in Quincy, IL, The EDGE 618 in Belleville, IL, Atomic City Family Entertainment Center in Paducah, KY and WarZone Ax N Tag in McKenzie, TN. Each one had something unique that put them on my radar.

Before setting out for my first stop I did two things. First, I stopped for breakfast at an AMAZING cafe in Quincy called Thyme Square Cafe where everything was fresh, local and made there on the premises right down to the fresh homemade tomato ketchup! Seriously, amazing (and on the rare occasions when I note a restaurant in this blog it is so I can remember it and return, because it was just THAT impressive).

Then I went out to my rental car and made a phone call to say thank you to the man whose innovative idea started it all. George Carter III is the innovator who hit the ground running first after conceiving the idea of laser tag while watching Star Wars. He and engineer James Dooley are the ones who made laser tag games in commercial arena attractions a reality before anyone else (although I also want to note that Lazer Zone and Star Laser Force were hot on the heels of this idea, debuting some of the very first laser tag products in the months that followed). However, the story begins with Photon and the concept art that George used to bring this idea to reality when seeking investors is the first artifact of this industry that has been evolving ever since.

So thanking George was a priority before anything else because I have such appreciation for the fact that everything that came thereafter is a result of this first innovation that we now celebrate every March 28th. And when I say this is an “overview of an adventure”, I mean that in the broader sense as well.

I took to social media, sharing the video recorded last week with “Happy International Laser Tag Day” messages from all the manufacturers in attendance at this year’s AEI. I am so heartened to see the industry come together like this!

I was also delighted to share this year’s commemorative Laser Tag Day poster featuring my Armageddon teammates Kassidy and Chris. This poster is made available as a free downloadable image courtesy of LaserTagMuseum.com.

My thanks to our friends at The Fun Warehouse for allowing us to do the poster photography at their site.

We brought in vintage Laser Strike packs to be the historical system featured on this year’s poster. A great deal of laser tag history can be traced back to these packs as well.

The poster release is one way we help laser tag operators to mark the occasion each year. I looked for what everyone else was doing to celebrate this day. I was delighted to find that many of my friends were spreading the word by sharing their own Laser Tag Day messages and I took note of how many laser tag businesses were promoting specials in honor of the day. I say everything from free T-shirt giveaways to half-price or $5 deals and special competition nights or events being planned by laser tag operators from all over the world. This is amazing!

My own personal Laser Tag Day adventure was unfolding for the entire day and even extended into the next morning (because there was too much for me to fit into only 24 hours!) so in the next few days I will post reflections about my own experiences this year. I would love to hear what you all did to celebrate Laser Tag Day too, so please feel free to share your stories with me. Wherever you are on the globe, I hope you had a chance to do something special too as we collectively celebrate the laser tag industry on the anniversary of the game that started it all. Happy International Laser Tag Day!
