My first stop on Laser Tag Day was to pay a visit to Scottie’s Fun Spot in Quincy, IL. This is a third-generation legacy family entertainment center in their 89th year of operation, which made it a particularly cool place to start the day!
I met owner Jeff Scott who grew up in this family business following a virtual introduction by Clint Novak the night before. Jeff gave me a tour of the facility, which includes a 2400 square foot laser tag arena where they are running Helios 2. He walked me over to the arena entrance, which is decked out with this cool spaceship that really grabs attention. Beam me up, Scottie’s! :)
The vesting room had about 20 H2 packs ready to go.
And the CW designed arena is bright and vibrant.
When the game began I discovered they had all the bells and whistles installed including video bases, game station and targets all over the arena. I headed first to the blue base station and discovered I could deactivate it up to three times…so I did.
As I played against the three young players who joined me for this game I taught them how to tag the base with three shots, but I didn’t miss an opportunity to tag the targets as well. I love the thundering boom sound effect (that in my head I call the “mic drop”).
I enjoyed seeing some of the unique arena elements, like this interesting creature guarding from above.
And speaking of what’s above, Scottie’s has an upstairs observation deck that is perfect for getting a bird’s eye view of the game.
Two windows look out over both the arena and the glow golf attractions. Jeff told me they reworked the previously larger arena to accommodate having space for two attractions instead. I must admit, it’s an attractive pirate’s theme glow golf.
They also have outdoor mini golf and karting attractions to offer as well.
But what has been the mainstay attraction since the facility opened in 1936 is the roller skating rink.
Jeff told me they are the longest running skating rink in the country, which makes this quite a historic FEC! The laser tag was added about 15 years ago in 2010. The party rooms pay homage to the various attractions, including this awesome laser tag wall.
However, what is most eye catching about the party area is something I really think is brilliant…the wall of handprints dated for the birthdays of all the kids who have had their birthday celebrations at Scottie’s Fun Spot. Amazing!
This idea is absolutely GENIUS and I’m sure it makes the birthday kid feel special both on their party day and when they come back and find their handprint on the wall…
…or the ceiling!
This is quite a remarkable visual to take in and in my opinion is a really great idea that impressed me to see.
As I left I paused by the billboard out front that promotes the longevity of this site. I am so glad I got to experience this FEC and learn about their decades-long history of success in western Illinois as my first arena visit of International Laser Tag Day!
