Photon Month From Start To Finish

It’s Photon Month - Day 31! On the heels of the 40th anniversary of Photon, let’s revisit the dinner event held during PHOCON 2014 (the year of the 30th anniversary) when George Carter III was welcomed with a standing ovation as he spoke to the audience and answered questions about Photon.

At the beginning of March I announced that this would be “Photon Month” at TiviachickLovesLaserTag.com and I would post Photon content every day for the entire month. I did put up a post each day, but now at the end of the month I have consolidated all 31 days of content into one single post to make it easier to reference. So if you want to check out all the Photon nostalgia that I posted each day this month, please check it out at https://www.tiviachickloveslasertag.com/single-post/photon-month-consolidated-posts.

Tagging in Modern Photon Style

I was on an early morning flight bound for New Orleans with one specific goal in mind. I wanted to spend International Laser Tag Day celebrating the 40th anniversary of Photon by playing Photon emulation on a modified Photon-inspired field. At this moment there is only one place on planet earth where this could be accomplished and it is at Game On Social Hub in Kenner, LA. Louisiana, here I come!

I really love this arena. It is definitely Photon-inspired, but also has a really contemporary feel and takes my breath away every time I visit. I met up with Scuba and headed into the vesting room (I needed to wear the Tivia avatar today for certain).

Using Laserforce Gen 8 gear we were able to experience a game emulating the elements of Photon, which is exactly what I came here to do. :)

There is something really special about tagging around these towers.

As iconic as the atmosphere is, this is not simply an homage to the original. It is fresh and current, even going so far as to incorporate completely custom new elements. These hexagon targets (14 scattered throughout the arena in total) are a nod to the use of specific shapes within the theming, but they are a completely original approach created by Elias from the Game On team to integrate with their game system. This is incredibly innovative!

As the definition of “photon” itself describes a particle of light, it’s incredibly appropriate that in this arena they have opted to let light be the very thing that creates the theming (as opposed to decorating the walls with with extra images or props) and this is incredibly effective in setting a specific mood. It evokes a chill, classic vibe and I was intrigued about how it was accomplished. The short answer…THOUSANDS of LED pixels!

When I asked about the number of lights (and length of light strips) incorporated into the arena Elias told me that there are 8196 individually controllable LED pixels in the main tower alone!

There are 550 meters of LED strip on the walls, 200 meters of lights in the towers equaling 3/4 Kilometer of lights inside the arena, so roughly 1/2 a mile of LED lights. He also told me they are pleased to have the most individually controlled pixels of any arena in the world. That is no small statement, but then again, this is no ordinary arena either.

Davor and his family have put so much into this arena that really speaks to me, but particularly on a day that was all about remembering the past and celebrating the evolution of four decades of laser tag. Thanks to Davor and Pat, Ricky and Christi, Scuba, Elias and everyone at Game On Social Hub for making sure The Light Still Shines…literally!

I can’t think of any more appropriate way to have spent the 40th anniversary of Photon on this International Laser Tag Day!

New Comic Book: An Early Review

40 years later, who would have thought there would be NEW news to share about Photon?

Piko Interactive is a company to keep on your radar, particularly if you are a fan of all things retro getting a resurgence. I appreciate being offered an advance peek at something that will be coming down the pike (no firm word on the details yet). As Piko Interactive has acquired the Photon branding they are in a unique position to bring new things to the market, inspired by all that we loved back in the day. One of their upcoming projects is a Photon comic book and after having read an advanced text of the book I am impressed and ready for more! Here is my early review of the upcoming comic, Photon Re-Energized, written by Steven A. Roman.

The new Photon Re-Energized comic book is not a remake of the original Photon story line, but rather a reboot that incorporates plenty of nostalgia into a modern day scenario. There is a relatable premise that will hit home with anyone who has ever wondered “what happened to the place where I spent all those hours playing the game?” Once that idea is established, one discovery leads to another in a story that starts out with a loose parallel to the “Bhodi Li becomes a Photon Warrior” introduction to the 1986 television series, but then reveals a whole new adventure featuring completely new characters with just enough details for the reader to know there is much more to learn about our new hero’s journey. The Photon references are liberally interjected throughout the book and if you are someone hoping to see more parallels to the original they are definitely in there, but this book is not replicating the Photon of the past. Instead it plays with the idea of different dimensions and hints at something more, which I hope leaves open some possibilities for bridging not only dimensions for the characters, but also for the reader. If you were a fan of Photon in the 80s this book has plenty of references you will recognize, but with a fresh take on the intergalactic premise of the past it will also be a gateway to showing a new generation that the light still shines.

My thanks to Piko Interactive for the advance look at this upcoming comic book. When details are available about how, when and where you can find it I will be sure to post the info here. You can also sign up for updates at bleem.net.

Happy International Laser Tag Day!

Today is International Laser Tag Day and also the 40th anniversary of the start of the laser tag industry! Photon was the first commercial arena-based laser tag game system, created by George Carter III and developed with engineer James Dooley. The grand opening of Photon Dallas was held on this date, March 28, 1984. It was a privilege to be able to present George Carter with an official poster in Dallas with thanks on behalf of the laser tag industry, which has evolved over the last four decades and began with the development of Carter’s original Photon game. George Carter III has been a lifelong innovator in the amusement industry.

Inside the Circuit

About a year and a half ago I remember Larry Kirschner from Blacklight Attractions telling me all about a laser tag arena he was working on near Dallas. He sounded very proud of building a unique creation and I promised to visit once the location opened. It took me awhile to return to Dallas, but it was well worth paying a visit to EVO Entertainment in Southlake, TX to see what had been built.

When I arrived I was greeted by not one, but three managers (astounding because I had not told anyone I was coming) and I was led to the arena where I suited up with Lasertron gear.

Then I got my first peek at an arena that really is different from anything else I’ve seen. It looks like you have entered the inner workings of a circuit board and you get to tag inside the circuitry. Very clever!

While at the Amusement Expo earlier in the week, Larry had commented to me about the ways he makes a smaller space feel like a much larger arena. I paid attention to the feel of this space and could see how he had applied techniques including a raised platform to create a second level without a full second story…

Chain link fencing that makes an open barrier that is both like a wall, but also like open space to tag through…

And I also took note of the unique cutouts including triangular windows.

A group of young players joined me for a game and it was plenty of fun to do team shields up/down Tron, but the arena itself was what made the biggest impact on me.

After the game I was right on time to grab some dinner in town with Ricky and Jessica and by this point in the evening it was nice to just relax and visit for a while.

This was a really nice ending to a very full day on my one day stopover in Texas.

Photon Landmarks, Photon Legends

I recently spent a day in Dallas, TX, which from start to finish was filled with Photon landmarks and Photon legends.

Photon Dallas was the very first Photon center and, as such, the world’s first laser tag arena. I jokingly say I made  a pilgrimage to the mother ship by seeking out this building, but it is really a very special place because of all it represents and all that began right here. This is where laser tag began. Thanks to Beathan Miller (aka Lord Beathan) I have a photo to show of what the place looked like 40 years ago as well.

Before making my way to the former Photon site I made a small detour to another building with Photon significance. I first pulled up the television episodes on YouTube to be sure of what I was looking for. At the beginning of the Skin Deep episode there is a very clear image of the home where local filming of the show took place. Here is the Jarvis house then…

And here is the Jarvis house today.

While spending some time seeking out these Photon landmarks I communicated with Beathan who told me he lives quite close to the old Photon location and kindly invited me to stop by his home where we had a wonderful visit!

There was something a bit surreal about meeting face to face. I felt like I had known him forever even though I was meeting him (and his lovely wife Hope aka Tempest) for the first time. It’s really astounding how Photon has connected so many people across distance and time. Bear in mind, the Lord Beathan I first recognized as a little girl looked more like this…

I guess the real Beathan looks a lot like that too! He greeted me with his incredibly rare character figure prototype, which anyone can agree is the spitting image of the man himself.

I spent about an hour and a half with Beathan and Hope sharing their Photon memories, which was such a treat! They are a significant part of Photon history and I loved getting a chance to visit with them. I also appreciated getting to hold a real piece of history. If my younger self at six years old who watched Photon back in the day had any idea her mind would have been blown!

After our visit was complete I went out to lunch with George Carter and his lovely wife Debi. While this man definitely falls into the Photon legend category, I am so glad that over the course of the last ten years I have moved past solely appreciating him because of Photon. I now consider him a friend who just happened to develop the game that started it all…40 years ago! This lunch was to celebrate George and the 40th anniversary of his original Photon game system. I was able to present him with the International Laser Tag Day poster and thank him on behalf of the industry.

What an amazing day I spent in Dallas appreciating all the Photon nostalgia that this wonderful day had to offer!
